Interesting music coming out of Okinawa these days. Asano Irei is one of my favorite singers of the new wave of artists who blend elements of shimauta, J-Pop and anything in-between to create their own unique style. (So yes, that means she pens her own stuff.) This is one of Asano's more J-Pop sounding tunes called "Delicious Oasis" (which also happens to be the name of her podcast). Don-don-ikou!
The winner, taken from a survey of "33 singers in several genres", was a duo called Vibe. Interesting to note that the majority of winners are male artists. In the J-Pop world, I can bet that the majority would be female singers like Ayumi Hamasaki and BoA. I'll have to give Vibe's album a listen. Link.
[Update!]
Found a video of Vibe on YouTube. It's a live version of the song "He and She" (uploader's translation I guess) sung with Jang Hye-jin. It's a pretty, powerful ballad, that's on the duo's third album "Re-Feel". Cool.
LINDBERG remains one of my favorite '80s J-rock bands with a female lead singer (another is JAM, a '90s band). The band broke up in 2002 after 14 years in the J-rock scene and "BELIEVE IN LOVE" was their 8th single, released in 1991 as the opening theme to the variety show "Yume de Aetara" (Fuji TV). Maybe I'll upload a Puri Puri song later. :)
WINTER SONG
Lyrics by Miwa Yoshida, Mike Pela
Music by Miwa Yoshida, Masato Nakamura
The dusk is gaining ground, lights flicker all around
And as I walk the lonely streets, the snow is falling ever faster
Looking to the sky, I wonder where you are
The way you came into my life, filling every day with laughter
I want to show you everything I see, the way I'm feelingAlmost blinded by the snowflakes on my face
Despite the chill I feel the warmth of your embrace
Intoxicated now, I stagger like a fool
I feel that surely I could float away...
I need to be with you tonight, to hold your arms around me
My love for you is deeper than the deepest snows of winter
The greatest gift I ever had was you
This sparkling crystal world, this magic winter land,
If I could share it all with you, and make-believe forever after
I want to show you everything I see, the way I'm feelingLike a blanket over everything in sight,
In the hush I hear the silence of the night
The snow has covered all the streets we walked along
I hope you still remember me tonight...
I need to be with you tonight, to feel you all around me
My love for you is deeper than the deepest snows of winter
The greatest gift I ever had
I want to show you everything I see, the way I'm feelingCan't remember feeling this way before
Do you know, do you understand what's going through my heart
Well the way that I love you, I just hope you feel it too,
Tonight wherever you are...
I need to be with you tonight, to hold your arms around me
My love for you is deeper than the deepest snows of winter
The greatest gift I ever had was you,
The greatest gift I ever had was you.
This is my song for you...
This'll be pretty cool as they're husband and wife which will also mean that the song Miki sings has to be one that Tomoyasu penned. According to nikkansports.com, that song will be "PRIDE" (from 1996).
On the other side of the wings, will there be fireworks (of the bad kind) between former couple Shinichi Mori and Masako Mori?

It's here! As is with every year the Kouhaku comes around, you may be disappointed to find (or is it not find) your favorite artist on their list of performers. (It was reported by nikkansports.com that Cocco—one of my favorite J-pop artists—would be making her initial appearance on the show but she's nowhere to be found!) Be sure to check out Wikipedia's Kouhaku entry if you're unfamiliar or wish to reacquaint yourself with the annual music battle. Artists I'm looking forward to for this year's show are ayaka, Angela Aki, IMAI Miki, ŌTSUKA Ai, DCT, NAKASHIMA Mika, NAGAYAMA Yōko, NATSUKAWA Rimi, BONNIE PINK, WADA Akiko, SUGA Shikao, and Smap. If it's any indication, majority of them are from the Aka-gumi who I'm predicting will take it all this year too. (The above image is of the artists who'll be making their first appearance on the show.)
Note: Number of appearances are in () with "0" being an artist's debut on the show. If available, I decided to link to the artist's (English or Japanese) Wikipedia entry which should also have a link to the artist's official website.

[Via NHK's special Kouhaku website.]
Nikkan Sports reports that J-pop singer Miki Imai (43) will make her Kouhaku (NHK's annual song battle) debut this year! This year marks the singer's 20th year in the biz so the only question that remains is which song is she going to sing? She could do a medley of her hit songs but I'm rooting for "Piece of My Wish" (from 1991). The Kouhaku airs live in Japan on December 31st.
In related news, J-rocker Cocco (from Okinawa) will also be making her Kouhaku debut!
[Update: Added "Piece of My Wish" to my Audio links.]
